The tradition of Advent celebrations in Marija Bistrica continues this year with an even better Advent programme with events during four thematic weekends, from the 30th of November to the 31st of December. The Advent season will officially open in Marija Bistrica the 30th of November, with a concert by Luka Nižetić.

Advent in Marija Bistrica, the site of the national pilgrimage to the shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a truly special experience, enhanced this year with concerts of spiritual music performed by the “Božja slava bend” group and Petar Buljan on the 1st of December and the Sisters Palić, who will have a live performance on the 15th of December.

In Bistrica, you can also enjoy the Advent fair, well known far and wide as a place where you can see and buy unique, locally made Christmas ornaments and traditional toys made by using original old-fashioned techniques.

This year, there will be a unique Nativity Scene on display in Marija Bistrica, created by using motifs from the traditional wooden toys protected as UNESCO heritage, and an ice rink we are calling “The Bistrica Fairy-Tale on Ice”. To help you make the most beautiful Advent photos with views of the Bistrica Calvary, we have a special photo frame decorated with motifs from wooden children toys.

On the 14th of December, during the Advent night of the light in Marija Bistrica, we will release sky lanterns with beautiful spiritual messages and enjoy a concert performed by “Begini“.

All Advent festivities in Bistrica come with the fun of tasting some of the unique delicacies typical for Bistrica that will culminate with the traditional Advent brunch on the 22nd of December, with a concert by Saša Lozar and a cup or two of mead or mulled wine, this year available in special Advent season mugs.

Advent in Marija Bistrica traditionally ends with a New Year’s Eve party at noon in the central square in Bistrica, this time with music by the “Kumovi” and “Ljubavnici” bands, and a grand Bistrica Christmas tombola.
